WILD MUSTANGS OF AMERICA

Wild horses in America, often called mustangs, are living symbols of the nation’s pioneering spirit and untamed landscapes. Descended from horses brought to the Americas by Spanish explorers in the 1500s, these animals gradually adapted to the wild, spreading across the Great Plains, deserts, and mountain regions. Over centuries, they became deeply woven into the story of the American West — representing freedom, endurance, and the bond between humanity and nature.
Today, wild horses roam primarily across western states such as Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado, where they are protected under the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), herds are monitored to balance environmental impact, grazing availability, and population control. Despite these protections, debates continue over their future — some view them as national treasures, while others see them as a challenge to fragile ecosystems.
