Killjoy's Exploits: History Channel: Battle For The Pacific [PS3, 2007] Part 1
KEP-12B/1: This is the first half of my primary run of the 2007 PS3 / XBOX 360 / PC version of the History Channel's WW2-themed first person shooter.
Unlike the secondary PS2 / Wii version made for the project, this primary version is not a conventional FPS, but instead a sorta history lesson through having each of the ten levels [the first five are shown in this half] being a simulation of important battles in the Pacific Theatre of WWII.
Unlike standard shooters, where the player is independently operating, here you need to be within close proximity to your CO at all times, as getting outside of roughly 40 feet away from his position is an automatic fail state. That being said, if you're running out of ammo, your squad mates are surprisingly effective at taking the enemy down for you, so there's one thing in the game's favour.
Which brings me to the weaponry. The game gives you a default set of weapons for each level, which are hardcoded - you cannot carry weapons into the next level - and except for rare cases you generally cannot replenish your ammo, unless you happen to be near a dead comrade [that being said, in Level 5 - the last level on this half of the playthrough - you get the chance to pick up a Trench Gun, which is the rarest weapon in the game, so pay attention to my playing], meaning if you run out of ammo in the level you're currently on, you need to swap out your weapons for captured Japanese weaponry, of which you can replenish ammo in conventional FPS fashion.
This isn't really a conventional shooter but more of an interactive history lesson designed to teach gamers about of the most important wars in human history - this is reinforced by the actual historical footage found at the intro and outro to each level - and as such while it falls short of the expected standard for regular games, it does provide some important value for historian gamers...
Although if you're after a conventional shooter with the same theme, the PS2 version or "Medal of Honour: Rising Sun" will do that one well...
Game played on a PlayStation 3 hooked up to an LG DBRH197 DVD Recorder and recorded in EP mode, then ripped onto an Acer Aspire 3 laptop using HandBrake, then combined together using Openshot.
Dead runs have been left in the playthrough for masochistic entertainment purposes.
