The Rant -A Fowl Call?

The proposal to remove fare boxes from buses in New York City aimed to create a sanctuary for everyone, reducing crime and promoting a democratizing force. However, this logic is flawed and mistaken for a solution. The fare box is not the prize, but rather a turnstile to the marketplace, and removing it does not dismantle the market. Instead, it waives the admission fee for everyone, including the fox. This system would inevitably lead to more crowded buses, creating a predator's paradise, creating more targets and confusion. The real danger of this logic is its complacency, as it acknowledges that crime is an immutable force and that our only recourse is to huddle indoors. The solution should be to create a city where predation is not tolerated through visible security, effective policing, community vigilance, and addressing the deep-rooted socio-economic despair that breeds such desperation. Making the bus free in the name of safety is to surrender and accept that the fox will always be among us.
