2 Workers Killed In Everett, MA Crane Collapse After Cable Snap. Mayor: They Were Cutting Dock Pipes
A tragic accident in Everett, Massachusetts, left two workers dead after a large crane collapsed along the city’s waterfront. The incident happened on Rover Street, near the Encore Boston Harbor casino, when the crane reportedly fell onto a dock and barge.
Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria said the crane’s cable snapped while workers were cutting pipes from the dock. “Two young guys in their 30s or 40s, out there providing for their families, lose their lives at work,” he said. “I’m sure when they left home this morning, this wasn’t something they could’ve imagined.”
One worker was pronounced dead at the scene, and another was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. Their identities have not yet been released. Rescue teams spent hours removing one of the victims from the wreckage.
Fire Chief Joe Hickey described the recovery effort as complex, noting the area’s industrial setting required “a large amount of resources and technical expertise.”
The workers were part of a crew dismantling a former Exxon Mobil facility as part of a major redevelopment project along the Everett waterfront. The general contractor, Charter, said in a statement, “We are devastated to learn that two individuals from a subcontractor have died following a horrific accident at one of our job sites. We are working with authorities to determine how this happened.”
Mayor DeMaria also confirmed that one of the victims may have fallen into the water when the crane collapsed. “It’s a heartbreaking accident,” he said. “Our thoughts are with their families and coworkers.”
Everett Landco, which owns the site, announced that all work has been halted at the marine dock while safety assessments are conducted. “We are cooperating with officials to gather information and ensure the site is safe for everyone,” the company said.
The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, along with local and state police, is leading the investigation, and OSHA has been notified. Everett Police Chief Paul Strong said another crane will likely need to be brought in to safely remove the damaged equipment for inspection.
