Cameroon has been gripped by unrest ahead of the announcement of President Paul Biya’s election victory. The 92-year-old leader, the world’s oldest serving head of state, has now secured an eighth term with just over 53 percent of the vote, extending his 43-year rule. Opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who won about 35 percent, has rejected the results, claiming he is the true winner and alleging an attempt on his life. Protests and clashes erupted nationwide before and after the vote, leaving several people dead and exposing growing anger over Biya’s decades-long rule.
