I just watched Piers Morgan’s interview with Betty Yee where she said something wild: she believes women could beat men in Olympic track events — and that maybe we should even move toward a gender-neutral Olympics. I think that’s a reckless idea. In this reaction I’ll explain why the biology of sport still supports separate men’s and women’s categories, why the trans-in-sports movement matters — but must be handled with realism, and why Yee’s vague claim (and refusal to name a single event) doesn’t pass muster.

Performance gap is real — In almost every elite men’s vs elite women’s event, men win by measurable margins. The 100 m world record gap is one example. Sex-based sports categories exist for reason — Because of physical differences, separate categories protect fairness and opportunity for women. Trans athlete inclusion must be handled with fairness in both directions — Inclusion is important, yes, but so are fairness, safety, and the preservation of women’s competitive spaces.

Vague claims without evidence undermine credibility — When a politician says “women could beat men” but can’t cite a realistic event, it comes off as ideology over data. Men & women are different, and that’s okay — Recognizing difference doesn’t mean hate or discrimination; it means acknowledging reality in sport.
Protect women’s sport rather than erode it — The conversation must balance inclusion with fairness, not treat women’s sport as expendable.
