Chapter Summary and Overview:

Revelation chapter 11 describes the activities of two witnesses who prophesy for 1,260 days, are killed by a beast, and are then resurrected and taken to heaven. The chapter begins with John being commanded to measure the temple but leave the outer court, symbolizing divine protection over the faithful while the holy city is trampled by nations. After the witnesses' resurrection, a great earthquake strikes, and survivors fearfully give glory to God, signaling the passing of the second woe and the coming of the third.

The measuring of the temple and the two witnesses

Measuring the temple: 

John is instructed to measure the inner temple, altar, and worshippers, signifying divine protection over the faithful, but to ignore the outer court, which will be trampled by "the nations" for 42 months.

The two witnesses:

Two prophetic figures are empowered to prophesy for 1,260 days (42 months). They are described as two olive trees and two lampstands, representing God's witnesses. 

Their power: 

During their testimony, they have the authority to shut up the heavens from rain, turn water into blood, and strike the earth with plagues. Those who try to harm them are killed by fire from their mouths. 
The death and resurrection of the witnesses

Death:

After their testimony is complete, they are killed by a "beast from the abyss". Their bodies lie in the streets of a great city, and the world rejoices.

Resurrection:

After three and a half days, "the breath of life from God" enters them, and they stand on their feet. A voice from heaven calls them up to heaven, where they ascend in a cloud while their enemies watch in terror.

Consequences:

The resurrection is followed by a great earthquake, and survivors are terrified and give glory to God. This event marks the end of the second woe.
