Deputy Andrew Nuñez, a six-year veteran of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, was shot and killed in Rancho Cucamonga after responding to a domestic-violence call.

Officials say the suspect opened fire as deputies arrived, striking Deputy Nuñez in the head. The gunman fled on a motorcycle, leading police on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash on the 210 Freeway near Upland.

The suspect is hospitalized and expected to face murder of a peace officer charges.

Nuñez leaves behind a wife, a 2-year-old daughter, and an unborn child. Sheriff Shannon Dicus called him a “wonderful father” and a dedicated public servant.
