“Training Up a Child in the Way of the Lord”

Text: Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

1. Understand the Verse
“Train up a child”
Raising a child is an active responsibility, not passive hope.
“In the way he should go”
Each child has unique gifts, temperament, and purpose.
Guidance must be biblical, wise, and tailored to the child’s spiritual and moral development.
“When he is old, he will not depart from it”
Proper training produces lasting habits and values.
Early spiritual foundation has long-term eternal impact.

2. The Responsibility of Parents and Mentors
Ephesians 6:4 (KJV)
“And ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
Train with love, patience, and instruction, not anger.
A child’s environment and guidance deeply influence their future faith.
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 (KJV)
“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children…”
Spiritual habits begin at home and in daily life, not just in church.

3. Methods of Training
Model Godly Character
Children learn more from our actions than our words.
Live a life of honesty, prayer, and obedience to God.
Consistent Instruction
Read Scripture daily.
Teach morals and faith through stories, parables, and examples.
Discipline with Love
Correct sin, but never crush the spirit.
Balance grace and firmness (Hebrews 12:7–11).
Prayerful Guidance
Pray for wisdom and for the child’s heart to be receptive.
Recognize that ultimately, God’s Spirit works in the child’s life.

4. Long-Term Perspective
Training a child is investment for eternity.
Proverbs 22:6 promises lasting impact:
Even if a child strays temporarily, a godly foundation brings them back.
God honors diligent guidance and prayerful teaching.

“For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
Spiritual sowing in youth yields eternal fruit.

Parents, guardians, and church leaders: take the responsibility seriously.
Reflect: What kind of example am I setting for the children in my care?
