How Jesus Lived - The Heart of the Shepherd

Subject: Jesus doesn’t just see the crowd — He sees every heart within it.

📖 Matthew 9:35–38 (CSB)

(35) Jesus continued going around to all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness.
(36) When he saw the crowds, he felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd.
(37) Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few.
(38) Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.”

Everywhere Jesus went, He carried the heart of the Father — teaching truth, healing pain, and reaching people right where they were.
When He saw the crowds, He didn’t see interruptions — He saw invitations.
He saw people who were hurting, weary, and searching for guidance — and He was moved with compassion.

The Greek word used here is σπλαγχνίζομαι (splagchnizomai), pronounced splangkh-NEE-zoh-my — meaning a deep, gut-level mercy that moves you to action.

That’s the heart of the Shepherd.
He doesn’t just see your need — He feels it. And He moves toward you, not away.

📖 John 10:11 (CSB)

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

And then Jesus said something powerful — “The harvest is abundant.”
The world isn’t too far gone; it’s ready. The problem isn’t the harvest — it’s the lack of workers.

💭 Reflection:

Who around you needs to be seen with compassion today?

Have you prayed for God to send workers — or to send you?

What would it look like to step into the harvest field where you already are?

📖 Romans 10:15 (CSB)

“How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.”

Let’s carry the heart of the Shepherd into the world — seeing, feeling, and going. 💛

Next time, we’ll begin The Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:1–6, where Jesus teaches what a truly blessed life looks like.
