Every year, Sally and I celebrate her birthday and our German heritage with a German meal and dessert. Last year was Sauerbraten and Black Forest Cake, but this year, we returned to a more simple Reuben. Did you know that a Reuben made with Pastrami is actually called a Rachel?! And, that Apple Strudel is actually Austrian? And, that Dill pickles come from Mesopotamia? And, that Sauerkraut came from ancient China? And, that Rye bread is not specific to Germany? And, French Dressing is from America, evolved from a French-style vinaigrette, with added ingredients such as tomato paste and paprika and spices? And, the only item on this menu that originates from where it is properly named is Swiss Cheese (ours was made in America and sold by Stop & Shop)? LOL It was a delicious meal!
