Deputy killed in line of duty prior to high-speed pursuit and crash on SoCal freeway

An off-duty San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy ended a high-speed chase Monday by using an unmarked vehicle to stop a motorcyclist wanted in the killing of Deputy Andrew Nunez.

Nunez, a six-year veteran, was shot in the head after responding to a report of a man threatening a woman with a gun in Rancho Cucamonga and later died at a hospital.

The suspect fled on a motorcycle at speeds exceeding 150 mph along the 210 Freeway in Upland before being stopped by the off-duty deputy.

The motorcyclist was hospitalized and is expected to be booked on suspicion of murder once released, NBC News has reported.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered flags at the State Capitol to fly at half-staff, praising Nunez’s courage and dedication to law enforcement.
