As a Muslim, Info. from-(Akram26docs)-Thanks... Perhaps I can clarify some information for Americans, who are known for their great ignorance. I am not American, and I have no connection to America. I have never been there and will never visit, of course.

This dance is not part of Islamic teachings, but rather a dance from the traditions of the Bosnian people before Islam entered their country. It was preserved after Islam, and they added some words glorifying the one God.

In the past, Bosnians used to dance this dance before going into battle as a way to warm up their bodies, especially in their cold region, and also to scare their enemies.

Currently, this dance has been preserved as part of the traditions of the Bosnian people and is not entirely part of Islamic traditions.

Most of those who perform this dance are elderly people, as a form of exercise that helps blood flow in their bodies and improves their overall health.

Perhaps some obese Americans could benefit from such a warm-up?

Islamic and Christian Religion are not compatible at all... its like oil and water do not mix at all today. No, it is not compatible. The Qur'an explicitly denies the divinity of Christ, which is one of the absolute bedrock tenets of the Christian faith. Without His divinity and associated sinlessness Christ's sacrifice and resurrection would carry no meaning or effect.

One additional note: I ran across this article today and I thought it would round out this answer well. In it the author explains the doctrine of the Trinity and why it matters so much. The fact that Christ was divine and one part of a triune Godhead is critical to Christianity, and as I said the Qur'an denies it outright. A great summary of the Trinity from the article:

All of the creedal formulations and theological jargon and philosophical apologetics have to do with safeguarding each one of these statements and doing so without denying any of the other six.

Without a Trinity there is no Christianity, therein lies the direct conflict with the Qur'an.

Religious Freedom and American Muslims Today.
This speech was delivered at the California Vision 2020 conference in Sacramento on Saturday, September 23, 2017.
Religious freedom is the first right guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, and the Founding Fathers saw it as fundamental to their vision of America.

James Madison, our fourth President, widely credited as “the Father of the Constitution,” wrote: “A mutual independence between religion and state is found most friendly to religion, to social harmony, and to political prosperity.”

Particularly relevant today is John F. Kennedy’s response to attacks on his fitness for office as a Roman Catholic where he said: “For while this year it may be a Catholic against whom the finger of suspicion is pointed, in other years it has been…a Jew— or a Quaker- or a Unitarian- or a Baptist…. Today I may be the victim-, but tomorrow it may be you…”

Religious freedom as enshrined in the US Constitution reads as follows: “Congress shall make no law establishing religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

There are two parts to this statement: the first prohibits the state establishment of any religious body; the second restricts the government from prohibiting the practice of any religion.

Despite this simple declaration, religious freedom has been a contentious issue throughout our history. Even after the Bill of Rights proclaimed freedom of religion as a founding principle, Native Americans were denied the right to practice their own religions well into the 20th century, while Christianity was forcibly imposed upon them throughout our history.

Also state and local governments continued to establish churches, impose religious tests for public office, and violate religious freedom in other ways. For example, Catholics in the nineteenth century often saw their churches destroyed by mob violence, while governments resisted Catholic efforts to build parochial schools.

And the scope of the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious liberty remains contentious even today.

In the famous 2014 Hobby Lobby decision, the Supreme Court declared that employers opposed to contraception on religious grounds do not have to offer health insurance that covers contraceptives.

And the courts continue to battle over whether laws banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation violate the religious freedom of those who on the basis of religious teaching are opposed to homosexuality.

American Muslims

It is in this context of ambiguity and challenges to religious freedoms that American Muslims find themselves, raising questions of religious freedom in new ways.

Most Americans are unaware that Muslims have a long history in the US.

Up to thirty percent of enslaved Africans brought to the Americas in the 16 and 1700’s were Muslims, though almost all were forced to give up their religion as other enslaved people did.

Significant Muslim immigration to the US began in the mid-1800’s, mostly from the Middle East.

The immigration reform of 1965, abolishing geographic quotas, led to a substantial increase of Muslim immigration from both the Middle East and South Asia.

Today American Muslims number about 5 to 7 million, and are represented in virtually all occupations, especially, doctors, college professors, lawyers, and, in Silicon Valley, as engineers and entrepreneurs in the tech industry.

Muslim women are the second most educated group of women in the United States, right after Jewish women, according to surveys.

American Muslims are a diverse community of people, more than half of whom were born in the United States, with significant percentages being second and third generation Americans.

40% of Muslims are immigrants like myself who hail from one of 50 Muslim-majority countries in the world.

Their belief system is Abrahamic, meaning they worship the God of Abraham, they follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad who is believed to be following the essential teachings of prophets before him that include Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.

Muslims believe in the hereafter, where we will be held accountable for our actions in this world, a belief that speaks to our responsibilities and to the values we share with all other Americans, such as care for the needy, care for the earth and its creatures, care for our communities, our nation, and our world.

The aim of Muslims’ religious practice is fundamentally the same as that of other faiths: virtuous character in all of our conduct.

Islam strongly affirms the importance of strengthening families, advocating modesty in both dress and conduct, and shares many things with other religions, including prayer, charity, and fasting.

Despite its shared heritage and common values with other religions, Islam is one of the most vilified religions in the United States. It really didn’t come to light until 9/11. And for that reason negative perceptions about Islam persist to this day. Surveys of public attitudes show that Muslims are the most unfavorably regarded religious group in the country.

Shariah, for example, which refers to divinely inspired values and principles that Muslims look to for guidance on worship and ethics continues to be misrepresented by Islamophobes as a political doctrine aiming at world domination, which is nonsensical, but nonetheless believed by many Americans.

Even the hijab, the headscarf many Muslim women wear as a sign of modesty, similar to the modest dress of nuns and orthodox Jewish women, provokes hostility, and at times, hate crimes.

Some Americans, including some in public office, seem to think that the Constitutional protections of religious freedom should not apply to Muslims.

This raises another question about religious freedom: is it simply a legal principle to be upheld by the government, or it is a fundamental American value? For if it is the latter, then it imposes obligations on all of us, and not just on government officials.

As for the government, at least up until the last presidential elections, the federal courts have done a reasonably good job of protecting American Muslim rights. For example, in situations where local governments have denied mosque construction or expansion, the federal government has stepped in and overturned those decisions. The most notorious was the controversy over the mosque in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where federal agents physically came in to make sure Muslims were able to enter their own mosque.

As for the attitudes and actions of the American people, as I just noted, surveys of public attitudes still show considerable fear of Muslimswhich not surprisingly has led to an increasing number of hate crimes against them. In the first half of 2017, after the elections, hate crimes against Muslims spiked 91% over the same period in 2016.

The worst danger to religious liberty comes when public intolerance and biased government action converge, and that is precisely the situation affecting American Muslims today. There are numerous cases of local governments denying permits to mosques, which we hope the federal government will overturn.

There are today over a hundred bills banning sharia that were introduced in 42 states since 2010, and 15 have been enacted into law. These laws rest on the distorted perception that Shariah is foreign or dangerous. Well, banning Shariah is like banning Halakha for Jews or canon law for Catholics, the laws that guide Jewish and Christian worship and practice. Such bans are clearly unconstitutional, and yet these laws exist and continue to threaten the religious freedoms of American Muslims.

We now face a far greater danger of this sort. The current Administration has brought the Federal government into this Islamophobic orbit; we have individuals in public office, serving the highest governmental positions in the country, who are openly promoting fear and distrust of Muslims, indiscriminately accusing Muslims of favoring terrorism, suggesting a registry of Muslims in the US, and explicitly calling for a ban on all Muslim entry to this country.

In addition, the current administration seems to be in the process of redefining terrorism as something perpetrated only by Muslims, ignoring—contrary to the views of most law enforcement professionals—the fact that the greater danger is posed by white nationalist extremists, as we all witnessed in Charlottesville. And white nationalist groups are growing in recruitment, especially after Charlottesville.

Where do we go from here?

So where do we go from here when public attitudes and major sectors of the federal government converge to threaten the religious freedom that is our birthright as Americans and as human beings?

Crucial as the First Amendment is as a legal principle, we must recognize that freedom of religion or freedom of conscience goes much deeper than any legal provision. Without freedom of conscience, human beings are not free people.

With this as our starting point, all of us must take the initiative to learn more about this freedom, its history, and the current threats.

We must then resolve to fight back, individually and communally. We need to join and support the various organizations that protect this freedom; we need to write letters to the editor and post and tweet on social media; we need to make clear to our representatives in government that we expect them to uphold religious freedom fully and vigorously.

Learning, speaking, and acting together, we can preserve this fundamental birthright of our humanity.

Because as president John F. Kennedy’s warned us “Today I may be the victim but tomorrow it may be you…” Thank you.

Islam’s Anti-West terrorist campaign triggered by a holiday song?.
The bitterest irony of what led to Islamic terrorism’s modern day war against America is that the man who launched it was triggered by an act of kindness.

It was 1948. Sayyid Qutb, an Egyptian political theorist and revolutionary who was seeking to escape persecution in his own country, came to the U.S. to study at Colorado State College. He settled in Greeley, Colorado, where its residents sought to welcome him.

Locals invited Qutb to attend a church social. He did so, but witnessed something that turned him into a raging anti-West jihadist. So irrationally profound was the impact upon him, it caused him to return to Egypt in 1951, committed to promote a violent anti-West, pro-Islamist ideology.

What possibly could have occurred at—of all places—a church social to so enrage him?

The fuse was lit when Qutb observed young couples take to the dance floor, embracing each other as a song was played. Writing about it later, he made his description of this event sound like a scene from a cheap sex novel. He claimed a “sedative atmosphere” permeated the room as lights were dimmed and the band played.

The song was a popular 1949 hit that won the 1950 Academy Award for “Best Original Song”. Its slow beat had couples embracing each other on the dance floor. Qutb reported the mere sight of these couples with their arms around each other caused him to feel scandalized by the “romantic, dreamy effect” and the “swarming legs.”

The name of the song triggering his disdain was one we still recognize today titled, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside!”

Unsurprisingly, Qutb—who believed Islam sanctioned misogyny—remained a lifetime bachelor. He wrote that the reason he never married was because he was unable to find a woman of sufficient Islamic “moral purity and discretion.” This is what irrationally led to his extremist anti-West mindset, propelling him to seek its destruction.

Qutb returned to Egypt where he launched his crusade against all that America represented. In the first book he wrote, titled “The America That I Have Seen”, he condemned U.S. culture and society. Lacking in his book was any effort to credit Greeley residents with their cordial outreach.

Qutb’s hatred for America eventually led him to join a Sunni Islamist religious, political, and social movement—the Muslim Brotherhood (MB)—formed in Egypt in 1928. By the early 1950s, it was gaining popularity and he quickly became a senior member/influencer of the group.

Unfortunately for Qutb, in 1952, a group of military officers, led by Gamal Abdel Nasser, took power away from Egypt’s monarchist government. In 1954, as president for life and having survived an assassination attempt by the MB, Nasser cracked down on the organization as it clearly was not compatible with the secular nationalist government Nasser promoted. Qutb was arrested, released in 1964, and rearrested in 1965 for plotting a government overthrow. He was executed by Egypt in 1966.

While in prison, Qutb wrote two books encompassing his radically anti-secular and anti-West thoughts based on his understanding of the Quran’s teachings. These inspired what today is known as Qutbism—an ideology of Islamic-Fascism.

In the years since Nasser saw the MB as an extremist threat in need of eradication, the group has found greener pastures in the West. It has taken root both in Europe and the U.S. Most productive for the MB has been college campuses and leftist organizations, that naively remain ignorant of the terrorist group’s grand plan to establish a global caliphate ruled by Islamic law.

As far back as 1991, documents produced in a U.S. court case revealed there were at least 29 Islamic organizations operating here—all harboring the MB’s commitment of advancing “grand jihad” to establish a foothold in the U.S. Many have MB ties directly.

Interestingly, in an effort to avoid being targeted in the West, the MB adopted a less vocally violent approach to its mission. While exercising a more moderate tone, it still remains focused on achieving the same violent goal of making, initially at the local level, governments in the West subservient to sharia.

Proselytizing to his followers, MB leader Mustafa Mashhur (1996–2002) made clear the group’s unhesitant reliance on violence, brazenly declaring, “We will only be victorious with terrorism and horror; we should never be morally defeated when they call us terrorists: Yes, we are terrorists.”

Sadly, several efforts to pass legislation labeling the MB as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) in the U.S. have failed, although as the proverbial wolf in sheep’s clothing, it is most deserving of such a label. Unbelievably, while we fail to label it as an FTO, Egypt—where it originated—did so more than a decade ago.

We have witnessed Qutbism at its worst. The al-Qaeda terrorist group responsible for the 9/11 attack against the U.S. fully embraced Qutb’s justification for violence against Western influence.

What the West needs to understand about Islam is that it is a dichotomy. There are Muslims who believe Islam to be a peaceful religion, but there are others who, like Qutb did, recognize it is not. For the latter, violence becomes a tool in their arsenal to be employed against non-believers whenever deemed necessary. Unfortunately, for infidels, the Quran thus becomes a potential license for violence, depending upon how the believer interprets it.

As so many victims of Islamic terrorist attacks around the world have learned, seldom is there any prior warning as to whether the license the Quran offers will be exercised or not. But this is the world Qutb has left us—one sadly created only after he was welcomed with open arms.

Young Afghans are embracing Sufi dance in which spin repetitively in prayer and seek to lose themselves in a spiritual trance that they believe unites them with God.

A group of young Afghans – both women and men – is coming together in the country's war-torn capital to practice a mystical Sufi Islamic dance.

The group’s founder says she sees their whirling dance, known as Sema, as a way of carving out a space in the country’s deeply conservative society, particularly when it comes to expectations about gender discrimination and dancing in mixed groups.

“I just wanted to express myself and my feelings with Sema dance,” said Fahima Mirzaie, a 24-year-old economist.

She recently danced alongside male members of her troupe at a cultural event hosted in a somewhat incongruous setting – an Italian restaurant in central Kabul. That night, she was the only women from her group dancing, although other women watched and read poetry.

As she spins, one hand reaches toward heaven and the other toward the earth, her white robe flowing, in the familiar image of a so-called “whirling dervish” seen across the Middle East and Central Asia. Dancers spin repetitively in prayer, chanting Allah and gaining in speed, seeking to lose themselves in a spiritual trance that they believe unites them with God.

But Afghanistan is not widely accepting of this mystical interpretation, and Sufism as well as dancing and singing were both rejected by the Taliban. Many Afghan women are wary of the Taliban returning to power in some form as part of a future peace deal, recalling the years of oppression under a strict form of Islamic law. But even in today's Afghanistan, women and men dancing together in public is mostly rejected as being against the country's culture, traditions and religious beliefs.

Most of the members of Mirzaie's dance group, which features men and women performing in public, are Shia Muslims. They're a minority in Afghanistan that's been targeted for attacks by the Islamic State group, which considers Shias — Sufi or otherwise — to be heretics. There are other Sufi dance groups scattered across the country's provinces too, primarily men but some women, who perform in front of mixed audiences.

Mirzaie says she’s unfazed by what people may say about her dancing. As part of the generation that's grown up during Afghanistan's latest war, she’s concerned about the violence in her society. She hopes she can change it through Sufism and the poems of Rumi, who's possibly the most well-known Sufi mystic.

Her group has also used Sufi dance to help them get through the coronavirus pandemic. During a lockdown earlier this year, Mirzaie closed her center and provided training to her students online.

Now, she’s back whirling in person. At the Italian restaurant, Abdul Ahad, a civil society activist, said he’d been to a few Sufi events in Afghanistan that perform in private, but this was the first time he’s seen women doing it.

Mirzaie’s mother Qamar says she's worried for her daughter. “There’s no security and girls are taunted on their way out to work.”

She says she stays awake at night, waiting until Mirzaie returns home after dancing.

Mirzaie’s father, an ex-colonel in the traffic police, her sister and her mother are among her few supporters.

But despite these concerns, she says she cannot live by someone else’s rules.

“I never asked anyone’s permission for starting it and I will not need anyone’s permission to end it, so I will never stop or surrender to anyone.”

Is there a reason for there being more mosques then churches in the United Kingdom ? The UK and most Western countries are heading towards atheism or agnosticism. Christianism is fading out. Islam is growing to become the first religion in various European countries. The bottom line will probably look like 80% atheist/agnostic, 15% Muslim, 5% Christian. One has to account for falling demographics along with loss of faith amongst immigrants. So no matter what the alarmists may say, European countries are unlikely to become majority Muslim albeit an increased influence. Muslims are generally more engaged with their religion than Christians, which makes them more visible. That said, historical Churches are numerous and exist in every village and town. Massive urbanization in the last century has not been followed by Church building due to the influence of atheistic ideologies. As a result, Churches in provincial towns and villages are mostly empty or mostly attract old people.

Nearly every village in the UK has it’s own church and you can tell by their design when they were built. Many date from Saxon times. The church used to be the centre of the community where people met for mass at least once a day.

The followers of Islam will have to engage on a massive building project to build more mosques than the current number of Christian churches in the UK.

As a Christian I have to agree with much of Sherif’s answer. The mosque is very much the centre of the Islamic community and includes a diverse sphere of activities other than the prayer hall. There are kitchens to feed the community and their guests. There are libraries where religious texts from the three Abrahamic religions can be studied. It’s always a source of sorrow to me that essentially Judasim, Islam, and Christianity stem from the same source and yet decide to fight each other. It’s a little like the members of the same family having a long running fued that cannot be resolved.

I think you must be getting confused. It may be that you have heard that there are more new mosques than churches. This could be true because the vast majority of our churches are old. Many of them are hundreds of years old. Some of them are 1000 years old. We already have so many churches that are perfectly good that we don't need to build any more. I actually went in three different ones yesterday and I can assure you that they are an integral part of our heritage.

In contrast our Muslim community is much smaller and newer and they are building mosques. However there are nowhere near the same number of mosques as there are Christian churches.

Estimates suggest that over 20,000 churches have been sold and converted to private homes in the UK. The simplest way to live in a converted church is to wait until a suitable property comes up for sale.

I suspect the question comes from a dubious YouTube video that claimed that London has closed 500 churches and opened 423 new mosques. The video has over 180,000 views.

The figure for churches closing is based on how many were turned into homes in the capital between 2001 and 2006, rather than how many closed in that time. The best estimates show there was a net increase of around 800 between 2005 and 2015. The video doesn’t reference a time period over which it claims 423 “new” mosques were opened.

Using the widest definition of a mosque, there are probably more than the video claims. At the time of writing, there were an estimated 478 in London, but we don’t have details on when each was opened.
