After 20 years serving his uncle Laban in Padam Aram (northern Iraq) Jacob is now called by God to move back to Canaan. His call back home is a good example for us to follow. The Lord is presiding over Jacob's life and the Lord presides over our lives too.

We see the work of God in the midst of man's failure in this Chapter. God turns dysfunction into function. When man is at his worst, God is at His best. Oh for the blessed hope of Jesus turning our defeats into His triumphs.

Jacob flees from his brother heading into the unknown full of fear, anxiety, and despair. He stops at a barren place and then has a dream meeting where God speaks to him - and realizes that the very place of despair and barrenness is the place where he finds God. These are 2 very shocking chapters in the Bible - you will be amazed!

We say goodbye to old Abraham now. A wealthy man full of age. Isaac and Rebecca are praying for a child. She finally becomes pregnant and the pregnancy is a difficult one. She prays, 'Lord, if everything is well then why am I like this?' We often misjudge our situations before God brings forth new life.

God repeats His promise to Abraham and Sarah they would have a baby even though it is humanly impossible to have children in their old age. God's promises are given to impossible situations, so that when God fulfills His promise He is glorified. Then God pronounces judgement on Sodom where Abraham's nephew lives. But Abraham intercedes in prayer for the City and God spares the righteous before Judgement. Let's keep praying for our cities that God would spare the righteous before His judgement begins.

Tonight we learn about Lot, Abraham's nephew. There are lots of lessons to learn from Lot. He was in a city filled with perversion. It affected his family. He was a saved soul but a lost life. God is going to Judge Sodom and Gomorrah for its overflowing sin, but rescues Lot from it. This is a pattern we often see: God removes His people before His judgement comes upon the wicked. We believe this is a pattern that applies to the Great Tribulation Period of history. God will remove/rapture His people before He judges the world for its overflowing wickedness.

We all relate to failure more than Success. Abraham repeats his failure again - even later in life. He never learned his lesson. We often can repeat the same mistakes, thus, we need the Lord's mercy and help to learn from our failures and not repeat them. God promised a baby, a promised Child. But, God did not say when. Now Abraham and his wife are in their 80's, past the age of child bearing. So Sarah, his wife, panics and attempts to fulfill God's promise in her own way. In ends in disaster. Our lesson is to learn to trust in God and not try to fulfill in our own works what only God can do in His divine plan and timing!

Abraham teaches what to do when we fail the Lord. Although he was a great man of faith, he faltered in his faith. But, he didn't stay down, he went back to the place where he had fellowship with God - Bethel. Mankind is in natural rebellion against God. In his pride he will do everything he can to live independently from God. Babel - means confusion! So God confused their languages to contain their sin. So in God's plan He raises a man - Abraham to start a nation by which Jesus the Messiah will save the world from its rebellion and sin!

These chapters discuss this great catastrophe that occurred in the ancient world. Is the story of Noah a myth, a legend, made up? Did God really flood the whole world? Genesis 6 is controversial and scholars are divided on what/who "The Sons of God" are. How one interprets "Son's of God" determines the meaning of the Nephilim. The Nephilim means "The Fallen Ones" in Hebrew. The Sons of God interpretation has 3 possibilities: 1) Descendants of Seth in Ch. 5. 2) Kings or Despots of old 3) Angels or, 4) Demon possessed humans. We'll discuss the options. But, it would seem the most evidence lies with options 3 and 4. There was some kind of illicit interaction between Fallen Angels and Humanity that led to God needing to destroy every living thing on the earth. There "appears" to be an adulteration of the human genome; a deliberate polluting or tainting of the human race's genetics.
