Arizona Judge Resigns After Bodycam Captures Public Urination Near Courthouse

On October 4, 2025, at approximately 1:30 a.m., Prescott Police Department officers responded to a report of public urination near Whiskey Row, at the intersection of Montezuma and Gurley streets in Prescott, Arizona. The location is directly adjacent to the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza.
Body camera footage released on October 28, 2025, shows a woman, later identified as Yavapai County Superior Court Judge Pro Tempore Kristyne Schaaf-Olson, 48, sitting on a bench after allegedly pulling up her pants. Officers confronted her immediately after the act, which occurred in a public street area near bushes. Schaaf-Olson was cited for misdemeanor public sexual indecency under Arizona Revised Statutes §13-1403, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Her husband, Jason Olson, 49, was present and intervened during the encounter. He was arrested for resisting arrest (ARS §13-2508) and obstructing a governmental operation (ARS §13-2402), both misdemeanors. Olson allegedly pushed an officer and refused to comply with orders to step back. He was cited and released from custody shortly after.
No sobriety tests were mentioned in police reports, and no alcohol or impairment was indicated in the footage or citations. The incident lasted under 10 minutes, with officers issuing citations on-site without further detention.

Schaaf-Olson self-reported the citation to the Arizona Commission on Judicial Conduct later that day. She submitted her resignation on October 7, 2025, effective immediately, citing the need to avoid distracting from court operations. Yavapai County Superior Court Presiding Judge David L. Mackey accepted the resignation, stating, "We appreciate her service to the community." Her judicial seat, a pro tempore position appointed for part-time service, remains vacant.
