At least 64 people were killed in Rio de Janeiro's deadliest-ever police operation, launched against the powerful Comando Vermelho gang just days before major COP30-linked events. Around 2,500 officers, supported by helicopters, drones, and armoured vehicles, stormed the Alemao and Penha favela complexes near the city's airport. Gunfire, explosions and burning vehicles turned the streets into warzones as gangs fought back using drones armed with explosives. Governor Claudio Castro called the raid Rio's largest anti-gang operation, describing it as a battle against "narcoterrorism." The UN condemned the violence and urged investigations. More on the Rio narcoterrorism operation in our next report.
