Lori Ann Day was one of the first people I met when I moved to Santa Cruz California in 1983. We shared an interest. We both loved to sing. We met at an open mic show in Capitola one night. "Open mic" was what they called Karaoke back then. We sang songs from prerecorded backing tracks on 8 track, and cassette tapes. Yes, I'm that old. Lori and I spent many years, in Santa Cruz, and surrounding cities, singing at various restaurants and bars, and we got to know each other quite well. So, when I heard that she passed away in December of 2021, from a very aggressive form of cancer, I was having difficulty processing her death. She had always been a very “keep to herself” kind of person, and she was no different when it came to her illness. She stopped calling, which she did from time to time, and that usually meant she had a problem that she had to deal with alone. I never imagined that she would treat a terminal illness the same way. She kept it to herself ... and then ... she was gone. Recently, I started writing memorial songs for departed loved ones (I've lost several), and felt Lori Ann tugging at my soul. She's one of my oldest friends, and it felt like she was saying: "You've had enough time to process and grieve, it's time to write one for me." So I did. And then I rewrote it, and rewrote it again. We had a bond, and I knew that she'd haunt my dreams f I didn't get it right. She would have to like it. So if I finished a draft, and then something weird happened, whether related or unrelated to the song, I knew it was her, rejecting that draft. This is the draft that had none of the previous weirdness, and I can only assume that she liked this version. I hope you do too.
