F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) is a first-person shooter and psychological horror video game developed by Monolith Productions and published by Vivendi Universal Games.

It was initially released for Windows on October 18, 2005, with ports for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 released in October 2006 and April 2007, respectively.

The game is set in 2025 in the fictional city of Fairport and follows the F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) unit, an elite U.S. Army team tasked with investigating supernatural phenomena.

The player assumes the role of Point Man, a new recruit with superhuman reflexes, who leads the team in confronting a rogue psychic, Paxton Fettel, and a mysterious young girl named Alma Wade, both linked to the secret research of Armacham Technology Corporation (ATC).

The game is known for its innovative artificial intelligence, which allows enemies to perform coordinated actions such as flanking, suppressing fire, and retreating under pressure.

A key gameplay mechanic is "reflex time," a slow-motion feature that enables the player to aim and react at normal speed while the world slows down, enhancing the cinematic feel of combat.

The game features a variety of weapons, including dual-wieldable handguns, assault rifles, shotguns, and explosives, along with a viable melee system that includes jumping kicks and sliding tackles.

The original game received strong critical acclaim for its atmosphere, graphics, sound design, music, and AI, though it faced criticism for limited enemy variety and repetitive level design.
