Hicham El Guerrouj, born on September 14, 1974, in Berkane, is a Moroccan athlete specializing in middle- and long-distance running. He is considered the greatest Moroccan athlete of all time.

Holder of four world championship titles in the 1500m from 1997 to 2003 and three other world indoor titles, he also won gold medals in the 1500m and 5000m at the 2004 Athens Olympics, becoming only the second athlete in history, after Finland's Paavo Nurmi, to achieve this double in both events.

He currently holds the outdoor world records for the 1500m (3:26.00) and the mile (3:43.13). From 1997 to 2019, he held the world indoor records for the 1500m and the mile, and from 1999 to 2023, he held the world indoor record for the 2000m.

His dominance in world middle-distance running spanned from 1996 to 2004, a period during which he set the world's best time of the year in the 1500m eight years in a row, from 1996 to 2003, suffering only three defeats, two of which were in the finals of the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. He also ran the 1500m 31 times in under 3 minutes 30 seconds.
