Wild Guitar is an American comedy-drama musical film directed by Ray Dennis Steckler, known for his cult B-movies. Released in 1962, it stars Arch Hall Jr. as the lead, alongside Nancy Czar and William Watters. The movie runs about 86 minutes and features rock 'n' roll performances, motorcycles, and a mix of teen exploitation tropes with slapstick elements, often celebrated (or mocked) for its amateurish charm and energetic soundtrack.
Plot Summary
The story follows Bud Eagle (Arch Hall Jr.), a wide-eyed young singer-songwriter from rural Spearfish, South Dakota, who rides his motorcycle to Hollywood chasing dreams of rock stardom. Along the way, he befriends the feisty dancer Vickie (Nancy Czar). Bud quickly catches the eye of the sleazy record label owner and manager Johnny "Scat" McCauley (William Watters), who signs him to a shady deal, promising fame and fortune. As Bud's career skyrockets with hit singles and TV appearances, McCauley's manipulative schemes— including creative control grabs and romantic interference—start to unravel. Tensions escalate into a bizarre kidnapping subplot involving bumbling henchmen, forcing Bud to confront the dark side of showbiz while rekindling his bond with Vickie. The film blends upbeat musical numbers with over-the-top villainy, culminating in a chaotic resolution that emphasizes friendship and authenticity over greed.
