Chapter Summary and Overview:

Revelation chapter 9 describes the fifth and sixth trumpet judgments, which involve the release of demonic forces upon humanity. The fifth trumpet unleashes locusts from a bottomless pit that torment those without God's seal for five months, causing them to seek death but be unable to find it. The sixth trumpet then unleashes four angels who kill a third of mankind through a vast army.

Fifth Trumpet: Demonic Locusts

The release:

A "star" (identified as Satan) falls from heaven and is given the key to the bottomless pit.

The torment:

Smoke and locusts emerge, darkening the sun and air. These are not natural locusts; they have the power of scorpions and are commanded to torment people for five months but not kill them.

Their appearance:

The locusts are described as looking like horses prepared for battle, with golden crowns, human faces, women's hair, lion's teeth, and scorpion-like tails.
Their king:

Their king is the angel of the bottomless pit, known as Abaddon (Hebrew) and Apollyon (Greek), both meaning "Destroyer".

The people's reaction:

Despite the torment, those who are not sealed continue in their evil deeds and refuse to repent.

Sixth Trumpet: Army from the Euphrates

The release: Four angels bound at the Euphrates River are released.

The army: They are tasked with killing a third of mankind and are accompanied by an army of two hundred million horsemen.

The outcome: Even after this judgment, the survivors refuse to repent of their idolatry and other evil deeds.
