Appeals to authority

In this episode of Nurses Out Loud, David, Nicole, and Ashley introduce themselves in a rather unconventional way: by using the words of their harshest critics. Why? To draw attention to the common instinct to defer to authority.

It feels right and natural for a speaker to introduce themselves by giving their credentials: “My education is blah blah blah, I’m certified in this and that, I have experience with stuff, so you should believe me.”

Modern life has gotten so complex that specialization matters. If your car breaks down, you’re not going to take it to a graphic designer to have it fixed.

It’s hard enough for a person to be an expert in one thing, much less everything, and nothing is more complex than healthcare. Not just the human body, which constantly, the more we learn, the more we realize we don’t know.

In healthcare, there’s also layer after layer on top of biology. Insurance. PBMs. Research fraud. Paper mills. Lawsuits. Laws. Lobbyists. Conflicts of interest. Whistleblowers.

We’re told by mainstream media, “don’t do your own research. It’s dangerous. There’s misinformation.”

The purpose of today’s episode is to acknowledge the necessity and urge to simply defer to the experts and move on with your chaotic, stressful, day to day life. What so many have learned, especially over the course of Covid, is that “trusting the experts” is not feasible if you value your health, the health of your children, and the health of your patients.
