The modern car was invented in 1886 when Karl Benz was granted a patent for his three-wheeled Benz Patent-Motorwagen, which is widely considered the first true automobile. However, earlier self-propelled vehicles existed, such as the steam-powered vehicle created by Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot in 1769.
