R. V. Johnson, W. M. Cook, W. J. Elder, A. B. Houston, J. T. Born, W. M. Wright, C. B. McGinnis, F. P. Hefner, W. C. Hale, Leon Boyce, M. G. Caldwell, A. W. Hunt, and W. C. Patrick, witnesses for the State in rebuttal, at the Trial of Leo Frank in the Fulton County Superior Court of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1913 (Testimony Portion From July 28 - August 21, 1913; Closing Arguments August 21-25, 1913)
Thirteen witnesses, all acquainted with C. B. Dalton (a key State witness who claimed to have visited the factory with women for immoral purposes), testified that his general character for truth and veracity was good and they would believe him on oath.
R. V. Johnson (who had known Dalton 20 years) added on cross-examination that he did not know Dalton had been indicted for liquor selling before leaving Johnson’s county, that Dalton left the church in good standing, but that he knew Dalton had served on the chaingang for theft 18–20 years ago.
This character-rehabilitation parade was offered to bolster Dalton’s credibility after the defense impeached him with prior convictions and questionable associations—countering the defense’s attack on his reliability and supporting his testimony implicating Frank in factory misconduct.
