Doughnuts are so good they have two National Days! Celebrated on the first Friday in June and sometimes again on November 5th, National Doughnut Day was originally created in 1938 by the Salvation Army to honor the “Doughnut Lassies” who served soldiers during World War I. The history of the American doughnut is filled with fun and fascinating facts — from the world’s largest jelly doughnut weighing over 1.7 tons in Utica, New York, to the invention of the first automated doughnut machine by Adolph Levitt in 1920, which changed bakeries forever. The ring shape we all know today is credited to sailor Hanson Gregory, who claimed he punched a hole in the center so his fried dough would cook evenly while at sea. Boston proudly holds the title of “doughnut capital” of the U.S., boasting more doughnut shops per person than any other city. During World War II, the tradition of serving doughnuts to soldiers continued with the Red Cross “Doughnut Dollies.” Today, Americans devour over 10 billion doughnuts each year, from classic glazed to creative flavors like maple bacon and matcha cream, proving that this sweet treat has evolved from simple fried dough into a beloved symbol of comfort and joy.
