By September 2023, the conflict had resulted in over 4.1 million internally displaced people, with more than 1.1 million others having fled Sudan as refugees.
The war has also drawn in other armed groups, including the SPLM-N (al-Hilu) attacking army positions in the south, the SLM-T joining the SAF, and the Tamazuj movement aligning with the RSF. This recent history follows decades of internal conflict in Sudan, including the First Sudanese Civil War (1955–1972) and the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005), which ultimately culminated in the secession of South Sudan in 2011.
