Explore the devastating reality of the War in Sudan (2023–present), a major internal conflict that began on April 15, 2023.
This war pits two rival factions of the military government against one another: the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The heaviest fighting is concentrated in and around the capital city of Khartoum and the volatile Darfur region.
The conflict leaders are disputed, including RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan "Hemedti" Dagalo and Sudan's de facto leader and army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. They have fiercely disputed control over crucial government and strategic sites in Khartoum, such as the Presidential Palace, the general military headquarters, and Khartoum International Airport.
The humanitarian toll is immense: as of mid-August 2023, casualty estimates ranged from 4,000 to 10,000 people killed and 6,000 to 12,000 injured. By September 2023, the conflict had resulted in over 4.1 million internally displaced people, with more than 1.1 million others having fled Sudan as refugees.
The war has also drawn in other armed groups, including the SPLM-N (al-Hilu) attacking army positions in the south, the SLM-T joining the SAF, and the Tamazuj movement aligning with the RSF. This recent history follows decades of internal conflict in Sudan, including the First Sudanese Civil War (1955–1972) and the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005), which ultimately culminated in the secession of South Sudan in 2011.
