Miss Sarah Barnes, witness for the Defendant in rebuttal, at the Trial of Leo Frank in the Fulton County Superior Court of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1913 (Testimony Portion From July 28 - August 21, 1913; Closing Arguments August 21-25, 1913)
Miss Sarah Barnes, a four-year employee of the National Pencil Company, testified that Leo M. Frank’s character was good, that she had never heard anything bad about him, and that he had been “the best of men.”
On cross-examination, Barnes stated that no one coached her testimony; she had told defense attorney Reuben Arnold exactly what she repeated in court. She emphatically denied ever meeting Frank anywhere for immoral purposes.
This testimony was offered to add another long-term female employee to the growing list of workers who vouched unequivocally for Frank’s moral reputation, countering the State’s character attacks and reinforcing the defense narrative of an upright superintendent surrounded by honest, uncoerced supporters.
