This prison is located in the small town of Moundsville, West Virginia. The prison was open from 1876 to 1993. The facility became notorious for its brutal torture and large number of executed prisoners. Until 1949, when hanging was still permitted in the United States, 85 criminals were hanged here. In total, 94 people were executed in various ways during the prison's entire existence. Spectators were allowed to attend the executions. There were many who wanted to “entertain” themselves in this way. The conditions in the cells were terrible, the cells themselves were small (1.5 by 2 meters), and torture was used for any disobedience. The last person to be executed in this prison was Elmer Brunner (in 1958), who killed a woman with a nail puller. Riots often broke out in the prison. After American legislation revised the conditions of detention for criminals, the prison in Moundsville closed permanently in 1993. Nowadays, tourists from all over the world come to visit this prison.
