Herbert Laser, witness for the Defendant in rebuttal, at the Trial of Leo Frank in the Fulton County Superior Court of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1913 (Testimony Portion From July 28 - August 21, 1913; Closing Arguments August 21-25, 1913)
Herbert Laser, a New York estate manager, testified that he roomed with Leo Frank at Cornell University for two full years (1904–1906) and remained in the same class for all four years (1903–1906). Laser declared Frank’s general character was very good.
On cross-examination, Laser emphasized that Frank associated only with the finest class of students and that they continued correspondence for two years after graduation.
This testimony was offered to push Frank’s impeccable reputation back to his elite Ivy-League college days, presenting the sworn endorsement of a long-term roommate who lived with him daily—directly countering the State’s portrait of a lifelong moral degenerate by showing Frank was trusted and admired in one of America’s most rigorous academic environments.
