Andrew Cuomo promised to unite behind Zohran Mamdani, who is projected to win the New York City mayoral race, even through shouts and boos from his supporters as he conceded tonight.
“Congratulations to Zohran Mamdani,” Cuomo said, cut off by a chorus of boos from the crowd.
“That’s not right, that’s not us,” he said, responding to the outpouring of jeers.
“Tonight was their night, and as they start to transition to government, we will all help any way we can, because we need our New York City government to work. We want it to work for all New Yorkers because our city is the greatest city in the world, and we will unite for New York City because we love New York City,” Cuomo said.
The nation’s biggest city will pick its next mayor on Tuesday in an election that has sparked debate over the future of the Democratic Party.
Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old state assembly member and democratic socialist who jolted the party with his victory in the New York City primary in June, will take on former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for the second time. Cuomo lost the Democratic primary and is running as an independent. Curtis Sliwa is the Republican nominee for the second consecutive election. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams initially planned to seek reelection as an independent, but amid sub-basement approval ratings, he dropped out in late September. He will remain on the ballot.
