Benford's Law – When Numbers Have Personalities 😎

Ever noticed that numbers prefer to start with 1 rather than 9?

Welcome to Benford's Law:

In many real-world datasets (e.g., income, invoices, election results), the number 1 appears as the first digit in about 30% of cases – while 9 only appears in about 5%.

Why? Because real numbers span many orders of magnitude, and the number 1 loves to jump the queue.

🕵️‍♂️ And what does this have to do with elections?

Data analysts sometimes use Benford's Law to check if numbers look unusually unnatural – for example, vote counts per district.

If the distribution of the first digits deviates significantly from the Benford curve, it means: Something's up!

But: Deviation ≠ Fraud!

Sometimes districts are simply the same size or numbers are rounded – perfectly legitimate reasons why Benford might get confused.

🧠 Conclusion

Benford isn't a lie detector, but a math sniffer dog:

He can bark when something smells fishy – but data forensics still has to do the biting. 🐶📉
