The Vietnam War started on November 1st 1955 and ended April 30th 1975. North Vietnam was supported by the Soviet Union and China, while South Vietnam was supported by the United States and other anti-communist nations.
The war exacted an enormous cost, estimates of 970,000 to 3 million Vietnamese soldiers and civilians killed and some 58,220 Americans died in the Vietnam War. The conflict was the second of the Indochina wars and a proxy war of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and US.
