Wake up

As of November 2025, 18 U.S. states offer residents a secure, standards-compliant mobile driver’s license (mDL) or digital state ID that can be added to a phone’s wallet app (Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or a state-specific app).
These digital IDs are accepted for:

TSA airport security at 27+ major airports (14 states are fully TSA-integrated, with others in rollout).
Age verification at select bars, liquor stores, and cannabis dispensers.
Law-enforcement traffic stops in many jurisdictions.
Limited business uses (hotels, car rentals, banking).

States with live programs
Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Utah, Virginia, plus early-2025 additions: Nevada, North Carolina, Vermont, West Virginia, and Idaho.
Over 5 million Americans have enrolled, with Arizona leading at ~1.1 million users (23% of its licensed drivers).
Another 15+ states are in pilot or planning phases and expected to launch by 2026. Physical licenses remain mandatory as backup, but digital IDs are gaining traction for everyday convenience and privacy (users share only needed data, e.g., “over 21” instead of full birthdate).
