Some time back, I tried a compact heater from G-Will and was impressed by it. Now, direct from Kickstarter, I have the latest model, which is an advance on the earlier version in every respect and brings with it many new features. The heater is available in white and black versions, but I selected white as I think it looks a bit more upmarket.

The heater arrived very well packaged in an attractive mid-market branded product box containing the heater, remote control handset, and a well written and easy to read User Guide.

Firstly, remember that this heater has been designed specifically for small rooms and spaces. It is perfect for small bedrooms, the home office etc, and is less suitable to heat large rooms. Sized at just 106x107×187mm it plugs directly into the wall socket with no cables or trailing leads to trip over and can be rotated to fit verticle or horizontal sockets. The heater, as to be expected, is lightweight at just 464g but the build quality seems fine.

On the top is a large and bright LED panel displaying the current temperature setting and operating mode, with buttons around it for heat up, heat down, mode, on/standby, and timer. There is a metal grill on the front to protect the ceramic heating element, and on one side is the master Power On/Off switch. On the rear is a UK three-pin plug with a button to allow the plug to rotate, and beneath the external temperature probe.

The remote control has controls for Temperature Up, Temperature Down, Wake Up Timer Set, Auto Off Timer, External Temperature probe On/Off, and On/Standby.

The device has five operating modes selected through the remote control or by pressing the temperature up and down buttons together on the heater itself to scroll through them. The modes are: Fan only, low power, eco mode, high power, and smart mode. In smart mode, the heater automatically transitions between power levels based on the difference between ambient and set temperatures. Eco mode balances heating and energy efficiency and is recommended for normal use. This where AI technology is used, and maintains the optimum temperature for the lowest possible power use.

The device has an auto off timer. Press the button on the remote or heater to scroll through running times by one hour, up to twelve hours, with the selected running time displayed on the screen.

Another feature is the wake-up timer. This switches the heater on twenty minutes before your selected time and turns on in high power mode, and will run for one hour if not switched off manually. To operate, select the button on the remote and keep pressing to scroll through the number of hours before you expect to wake up. For example, at midnight, press the button 7 times and the heater will switch on, set to full power at 6.40am and will run until 7.40am unless you switch it off first.

The easiest way to operate the heater is with the remote control. The remote control is well made, medium-sized, and with proper clicky buttons. It features controls for all the operating features of the heater.

Drawbacks? Not many, the front grill, which does not show red when in operation, gets very hot, very quickly, so keep this device out of the way of children or animals. It does take a full minute to fully switch off, which can be a nuisance at times, but don’t be tempted just to unplug it, as bad things may happen. During the power off routine, the remaining time is displayed on the screen.

For the expected launch price of £49.99, this is well worth considering if you are in need of a fire and forget fan heater but are short on space and cash.
