J. C. Matthews, witness for the Defendant in rebuttal, at the Trial of Leo Frank in the Fulton County Superior Court of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1913 (Testimony Portion From July 28 - August 21, 1913; Closing Arguments August 21-25, 1913)
J. C. Matthews, an employee at Montag Bros., testified that he saw Leo M. Frank in the Montag Bros. office on the morning of April 26, 1913. Though he could not recall the exact time, his presence confirmed Frank was at Montag Bros.—not isolated at the factory—during the critical pre-noon hours.
This brief sighting, corroborated by Gottheimer and Nix, placed Frank away from the crime scene when the State claimed he was luring Mary Phagan.
A routine business morning became another link in the defense’s unbreakable chain.
