Chapter Summary and Overview:

Hebrews 9 summarizes the old covenant's sacrificial system, describing the tabernacle and the high priest's yearly sacrifice as temporary and incomplete. It then contrasts this with Jesus Christ's sacrifice, which is superior because he is the mediator of a new covenant, entering heaven with his own blood to obtain eternal redemption. His one-time sacrifice purifies consciences and provides a permanent, once-and-for-all way to God.

The Old Covenant and Tabernacle

Physical vs. heavenly:

The earthly tabernacle and its rituals were a copy of the true, heavenly sanctuary.

Priestly limitations:

The high priest could enter the Holy of Holies only once a year with blood to atone for the sins of the people.

Incomplete atonement:

The animal sacrifices under the old covenant were temporary, could not provide full forgiveness or eternal life, and had to be repeated annually.
Christ's New Covenant Sacrifice

Superior high priest: Christ entered the heavenly sanctuary not with the blood of animals, but with his own blood.

Eternal redemption: His sacrifice provides a once-for-all, eternal redemption for sins.

Mediator of the new covenant: Christ is the mediator of a new and better covenant that purifies the conscience from sin and allows for worship of the living God.

One-time offering: His sacrifice was a single event that is sufficient and final.
