The Feds stood up an entire company town and then pulled the plug in 18mo

In 1918, the federal government bought up 6000 acres of the New Jersey pine barrens to set up an explosives factory. Not only that, they came prepared with a holistic, ground up, soup to nuts approach to establish an entire town to run it. It had homes, schools, recreation facilities including a bowling alley and a swimming pool. At its peak it was home to 10 thousand people. Unfortunately, it never occurred to them that the factory would simply close… y’know when world war 1 was over… less than a year after construction was completed. Within a few short years, the town of Amatol was abandoned and reclaimed by the pines from whence it came.
