From Hesiod to Heaven’s Bureaucracy: The Politics of Creation

As human societies grew more complex, their gods followed suit. Early myths were chaotic, filled with mothers birthing gods and earth merging with sky — until kings needed order. Theogony, written by Hesiod, marks a crucial shift: the universe becomes a hierarchy. Chaos gives birth to Gaia, Gaia to Uranus, Uranus to Kronos, Kronos to Zeus — each generation overthrowing the last, until divine kingship mirrors human monarchy.

But this wasn’t limited to Greece. Across the steppe world, Mongolian sky cults turned the heavens into a state — with Tengri as supreme ruler. In Israel, Yahweh emerged as a singular authority, abolishing divine councils in favor of a cosmic bureaucracy under one god.

The creation of myths was not an accident — it was the first form of governance. The universe itself was rewritten to justify the throne.
