MZTV 1859: Christian Idolatry/When God Puts On a Front

When Paul was on Mars Hill, he practically congratulated the Athenian philosophers for devoutly recognizing "The Unknowable God." As I said yesterday, at least the Athenians didn't dare put their own imprint on the True God. The Christian world is not so careful.

Christian men and women have fashioned "God" into their own image. God has set a trap for them, essentially, by coming across as a man. To anyone even vaguely aware of the glory of God, these presentations are figurative. They are God relating to ants in the language of ants. But it suits the world's most popular religion (it makes them feel big) when they take these passages literally so as to make their God a lot like them. In this, they have fallen into the trap.

Paul puts his finger here in Romans 1:23, writing concerning those so snared, "They change the glory of the incorruptible God into the likeness of an image of a corruptible human being."

Could the ugly truth be painted any more accurately? This transcends self-righteousness, camping in the land of idolatry.

I'm kinda feeling sorry for them.
