On top of the skin, especially the face, is the acid mantle. This acidic, protective barrier houses millions of microbes that protect you. Putting the wrong products on your skin can negatively affect this environment, leading to redness, rashes, acne, dry skin, and other skin problems. Avoid the following 11 products that ruin your skin! 1. Apple cider vinegar ACV is too acidic for the skin. It can cause irritation and redness. If you want to use it on your skin, dilute one teaspoon into 8 ounces of water. 2. Lemon juice Don’t put lemon juice on your face or hair! It contains a phytochemical that can cause problems when you’re exposed to sunlight. 3. Essential oils Some essential oils, such as cedarwood and tea tree oil, are simply too strong for the skin. 4. Bergamot Combining bergamot with sun exposure can cause skin inflammation. 5. Baking soda With a pH of 9, baking soda is too alkaline for the skin. It can damage the acidic environment, compromising the beneficial microbes on the skin. 6. Toothpaste Harsh ingredients like peroxide and fluoride should not be used on your skin. 7. Rubbing alcohol Alcohol kills the microbes on the surface of your skin. This can allow the overgrowth of unfriendly bacteria. Many creams and lotions contain alcohol, so be sure to check the ingredients of your skin care products. 8. Hydrogen peroxide This is effective for removing stains on the teeth and for cleaning, but it's not suitable for use on the face. 9. Hair dye Hair dye used for your eyebrows and eyelashes can be very dangerous to your eyes. 10. Topical steroids Redness, irritation, and flakiness are often treated with topical steroids without second thought. Topical steroids stop the growth of skin cells and the production of collagen. 11. Exfoliating scrubs Frequent use of exfoliating scrubs can scrub off the microbiome of your face. It’s beneficial to get a filter for your shower head to reduce skin exposure to chlorine and fluoride. The first ingredient in many multivitamins is often calcium carbonate, which is limestone! The first ingredient usually makes up the majority of the product. Magnesium oxide, another common ingredient, is very cheap and has the lowest absorption rate compared to other forms of magnesium. The term “natural” isn’t regulated, so ingredients derived from sources such as petroleum and coal tar can be labeled as natural. In nature, vitamins don’t exist alone; they are combined with other nutrients and cofactors, which are often missing when you take synthetic vitamins. Biochemistry can not work without cofactors. Although there are nutrients that are difficult to obtain in sufficient amounts from food, that doesn’t mean they should be replaced with synthetic multivitamins. Maltodextrin is commonly used as a filler in vitamins and minerals. It’s a highly refined industrial starch, classified as a complex carbohydrate, and spikes blood sugar more than sugar. Ascorbic acid is a synthetic part of the vitamin C complex. Approximately 90% is made in China from GMO corn and sulfuric acid. Many people have a genetic issue converting cyanocobalamin, a synthetic form of B12, and folic acid, a synthetic form of B9, into their active forms. This can cause negative side effects in 40% of the population. Almost all of the popular multivitamins are owned by Big Pharma, Big Food, Big Chemical, or large investment groups. When you visit the doctor for these conditions, they typically address the symptoms rather than examining the root cause. The root cause of plaque in the arteries is endothelial damage. Endothelial damage and inflammation are repaired by plaque, composed of calcium, cholesterol, and protein. Arterial damage decreases nitric oxide levels, resulting in less control over blood pressure and an increased risk of clotting. Around 90% of heart attacks come from clots! Sunlight is vital to increase nitric oxide. Nasal breathing and magnesium are also essential. You can reverse arterial plaque buildup through a process called reverse cholesterol transport. Consuming this dangerous carbohydrate can have the following side effects: •Development of type 2 diabetes and a fatty liver •Insulin resistance •Visceral fat •Feeds pathogens in the gut •Inflammation •Increased LDL cholesterol Products containing this ingredient can be marketed as zero sugar, even though it quickly turns to sugar in the blood. It’s incredibly cheap, at about 20 cents per pound, and has no health benefits. It’s used as a filler, and the average person consumes between 60 and 250 pounds per year. You can find this ingredient in gluten-free foods, baby formulas, baked goods, and other refined foods. Surprisingly, many athletes also consume this product. The carb we’re talking about is industrial starch, such as modified food starch, corn starch, and maltodextrin. Starch is a string of glucose molecules. When a starch is modified in a lab, its bonds become very weak and fragile, causing it to turn into sugar very quickly in the body. Industrial starches are processed with chemicals such as sodium trimetaphosphate, vinyl acetate, bleach, and octenyl succinic anhydride. These chemicals are considered GRAS (generally recognized as safe), but they are self-regulated. Industrial starches are directly responsible for the complications associated with type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, brain plaquing, and fibrosis of the liver. People rarely consume starch alone. Most junk foods are composed of starches, seed oils, and sugar. Consuming starch with seed oils is a deadly combination! Hidden sugars are also consumed in much higher quantities than actual sugar. Food is defined as “that which is eaten to sustain life, to promote the growth and repair of tissues.” By this definition, starch is not food! The real benefit is the change in environment. Fermented and cultured foods change the pH and oxygen levels in the gut. They also provide food and metabolites for the gut microbes, which can also help activate dormant microbes. Many microbes have been suppressed by antibiotics, junk food, and other factors. Many of them are keystone microbes, which are vital for your gut health. Unless your yogurt says it contains live and active cultures, it’s been double-pasteurized. Commercial yogurt typically ferments for 1 to 2 hours, whereas traditional homemade yogurt ferments anywhere from 8 to 36 hours. By the time you eat commercial yogurt, there are significantly fewer CFUs of bacteria than stated on the label. Sugar in yogurt can kill the friendly bacteria and feed pathogens in your gut. Added ingredients, such as pectin, gels, and guar gum, inhibit bacterial movement. Yogurt fermented for only 1 to 2 hours will not have the right texture or thickness, so ingredients such as modified food starch, carrageenan, and polysorbate 80 are added. These ingredients can destroy the mucosal layer of the gut, leading to leaky gut and inflammation. Many commercial yogurts contain artificial sweeteners, which are known to alter the gut microbiome. Many processed yogurts contain bioengineered food ingredients that may contain traces of glyphosate, a patented antibiotic. This means the very product you’re consuming to support your gut health could be destroying your gut microbes. Probiotics contain significantly more microbes than yogurt. These freeze-dried microbes are often able to reach the large intestine and reseed the gut, especially when taken repetitively. Kefir, which contains both bacteria and yeast, is also a better option than yogurt. Sauerkraut is an excellent food for gut health. It contains polyphenols, postbiotics, SCFAs, sulforaphane, organic acids, glutamine, and the compound s-methylmethionine. Carbs and sugar before bed Growth hormone rises at night, but is blunted by a rise in blood sugar. This hormone helps you burn fat, repair tissues, and build muscle mass. A massive blood sugar spike before bed can interfere with your sleep and cause grogginess, fatigue, cravings, and irritability the next day. 2. Screens and lights before bed Avoid lights and screens, especially those emitting blue light, for at least 2 hours before bed. Melatonin is suppressed by light. Not only does this powerful antioxidant help you sleep, but it’s more important than glutathione for detoxification and DNA repair. Blue light also suppresses deep delta wave sleep and REM sleep. 3. Using alcohol to fall asleep Alcohol tricks your body into falling asleep, but you’re not really sleeping: your body is working to detoxify alcohol. Alcohol increases cortisol and adrenaline, and depletes electrolytes. It also depletes vitamin B1, which can cause anxiety and nervous tension the next day. Instead of alcohol, try magnesium glycinate in warm water or kombucha tea. 4. Late-night junk food Junk foods typically contain seed oils, which are inflammatory and hard on the gallbladder. If you’re craving salty food before bed, try putting a small amount of sea salt in your mouth or adding more salt to your dinner. 5. Antihistamines or sleeping pills before bed Sedated, artificial sleep does not leave you feeling rejuvenated and rested in the morning. People often feel less focused with decreased concentration and memory. You may eventually need more of the drug to create the same effect. 6. Sleeping next to your cell phone Your cell phone and charging cable both emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs), which can negatively impact your brain and sleep cycles. EMFs also interfere with melatonin. Keep your cell phone on airplane mode or away from your body when you’re sleeping. 7. Sleep deprivation Sleep deprivation can make sleep more difficult in itself. You need at least 7 hours of sleep each night. Try to get to sleep at 10:00 p.m. each night, or 11:00 p.m. at the latest. It kills around 1.3 million people each year, yet you don't hear much about it. Latent infections such as herpes, EBV, CMV, HPV, and Hepatitis B and C are able to go in and out of remission. Today, we’re going to talk about the pathogen that gives you tuberculosis. Tuberculosis (TB) doesn’t evade the immune system, it invades it. TB hides inside the macrophage, which is responsible for cleaning up bacteria and infections in the body. TB affects more people in the northern hemisphere away from the equator, and its incidence increases in the winter. Older people or those with type 2 diabetes, HIV, or low vitamin D are at an increased risk of an active TB infection. TB blocks the vitamin D receptor, which lowers your immune function. There was an uptick in TB outbreaks in the 80s when sun phobia was promoted. This campaign significantly reduced vitamin D levels by reducing sun exposure. Before the development of antibiotics, people with tuberculosis would go to sanatoriums for fresh air and sunlight exposure. Cod liver oil was also shown to be beneficial for people with tuberculosis infections. The immune system destroys TB with a compound called cathelicidin, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that depends on vitamin D. Not only is the sun vital for vitamin D production, but it also exposes you to infrared light. Infrared reverses mitochondrial damage and can increase vitamin D signaling, further protecting you from a TB infection. Eggs are the most absorbable form of protein, which sets them apart from other sources of protein, such as meat and fish. Protein is an essential building block for muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It’s vital for repair, hormone and enzyme composition, and can even be used as a fuel source. When you consume animal protein, you can only use 10 to 20 percent for fuel. In comparison, 65% of an egg can be used as fuel! Eggs also contain anti-microbial proteins and have iron and biotin-binding properties. Eggs have all the amino acids, including leucine, which is the key amino acid in muscle building. Eggs are the second-highest source of choline, which prevents a fatty liver and helps make up bile. Choline is also essential for a process called methylation. Eggs contain lutein and zeaxanthin, powerful antioxidants that support the health and function of the retina and brain. They contain phospholipids, which further support the membranes of the brain and other bodily tissues. Eating eggs can even help lower blood pressure! Eggs contain vitamin K2, which helps transport calcium and keep it out of the soft tissues, directing it instead into the teeth and bones. They contain the active form of vitamin A and also contain vitamin D. Approximately 65% of all eggs consumed are conventional, which come from caged chickens. Cage-free is a better option, but it doesn’t guarantee the chickens have outdoor access. Organic pasture-raised eggs are the best option. Organic refers to the feed that’s given to the chicken, and “vegetarian-fed” does not necessarily mean the egg is better. Conventional eggs come from chickens that are fed GMO corn and soy, so the eggs have a higher omega-6 content. Dr. Seheult shares some fascinating new research about the ability of sunlight to penetrate the human body. It’s been previously thought that the sun could only penetrate a few centimeters into our bodies, but recent research has shown that it can penetrate the entire body and can even be measured on the other side. Surprisingly, randomized, placebo-controlled studies have shown that light can affect parts of the body that were not exposed to sunlight. This phenomenon is known as the abscopal effect. This means that mitochondria from one part of the body can communicate with each other and upregulate, even if they are not directly exposed to light. Infrared light can stimulate the mitochondria to produce more melatonin, which can reduce oxidative stress. It’s not significantly affected by the atmosphere, so you can get it almost any time of the day. UVB light, which you need to make vitamin D, is more abundant when the sun is at its highest. Green trees, leaves, and grass reflect infrared light. To maximize infrared light absorption, head to green spaces where nature can reflect infrared light back to you! The Green Heart Study measured the HSCRP, which correlates with the risk of stroke or heart attack, in residents of South Louisville, Kentucky —a region characterized by concrete and a lack of greenery. Approximately 8,000 trees were planted in a 4-square-mile area, and the HSCRP was remeasured. This resulted in a 13% to 20% average drop in HSCRP, which correlates to a 10% to 15% reduction in stroke and heart attack risk, without any changes in diet or exercise. Dr. Seheult also explains that daytime light exposure helps with sleep by supporting the circadian rhythm, while nighttime light exposure can have an opposite effect. Seed oils cause damage to the cell membranes (which contain insulin receptors) and damage to the mitochondria. There is evidence that unsaturated fatty acids can reduce the risk of diabetes, but this is not the case with rancid, oxidized seed oils. These highly refined seed oils are full of toxic byproducts such as aldehydes, which create irreversible damage in the insulin receptor. Beta carotene is not the same as vitamin A's active form. Synthetic beta carotene, made from coal tar and petroleum, can increase the risk of certain cancers. Folic acid is different from folate, the natural form of vitamin B9. Around 30% to 40% of the world's population has an alteration of the MTHFR gene, which interferes with their ability to turn folic acid into folate, causing it to build up in the blood. This can lead to an increased risk of cancer and a suppressed immune system. Synthetic B12, or cyanocobalamine, requires glutathione to convert to the active form methylcobalamine. Consuming large amounts of synthetic B12 depletes you of this vital antioxidant. Calcium carbonate is the main ingredient in many popular multivitamins. It can build up in the arteries and kidneys and increase your risk of a heart attack. Too much iron can increase your risk of type 2 diabetes, liver issues, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. Many iron supplements contain ferrous sulfate, a damaging, poor-quality source of iron. Magnesium oxide is a cheap, poorly-absorbed form of magnesium that frequently causes diarrhea. Choose magnesium glycinate for significantly better absorption, better sleep, lower cortisol, and more overall benefits. Synthetic vitamin D is called ergocalciferol and is made by exposing fungus or yeast to UV radiation. Vitamin D2 is not nearly as beneficial as vitamin D3, yet it’s the most prescribed. Don’t consume supplements with added omega-6 fat, often in the form of linoleic acid. Too much omega-6 fat increases inflammation. We need copper, but high amounts of cheap copper can be toxic. RFK Jr. did not say that Tylenol causes autism, but that it could be a contributing factor that can influence susceptible people to develop autism. He has raised awareness of this link and has called for further research. Tylenol is used for fevers, headaches, pain, menstrual cramps, and more. Most people think it doesn't have many side effects, but it’s the leading cause of acute liver failure. Over 80,000 people each year end up in the ER because of too much acetaminophen. Tylenol’s active ingredient depletes glutathione and is found in over 600 medications. A fever is a natural immune reaction to an infection, and suppressing this can increase the infection’s duration. There are multiple causes of autism. One involves a genetic component with the MTHFR gene, which weakens your ability to detoxify and increases your risk of a folate deficiency. Leucovorin is a synthetic folate derivative recommended for some instances of autism. This medication could be beneficial and may provide optimal results if taken with B12, B2, B6, magnesium, and zinc. One study found that between 56% and 75% of those with autism had a folate deficiency! In another trial, synthetic folate boosted IQs by 25% to 50% compared to the placebo. Independent research is needed to explore the vaccine link to autism. Don’t eat until you’re hungry! People often eat for emotional reasons. This trains the body to associate food with stress relief, happiness, and pleasure. Many people will also keep eating even after they’re full. Constant eating leaves you constantly bloated and turning to antacids for relief. It overwhelms the microbes, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and stomach, causing them to work overtime. If you’re eating when you’re not hungry, you’re constantly spiking insulin. Insulin is the hormone that causes fat storage and removes sugar from the blood. When you have chronic high insulin, you develop a protective mechanism called insulin resistance, where insulin no longer works. This leads to more hunger and cravings. If you only eat when you are hungry, your body will tell you how long you should fast. Fasting allows you to burn your own fat for fuel. There is no one bad food, and you can consume “everything in moderation”. These diet lies will not work! All calories are not the same! Let’s look at the hormone insulin, which tells calories where to go. If insulin is high, your carbohydrates will be stored as fat. If it’s low, those calories will be burned. All it takes is a small amount of carbohydrates to raise insulin and prevent your body from burning fat. Cortisol, the stress hormone, can indirectly raise your insulin. It interferes with sleep, when most of your fat burning occurs. Fiber can help buffer a blood sugar spike. Orange juice without the fiber will increase your blood sugar significantly more than whole oranges with fiber. Highly refined industrial starch is classified as a complex carbohydrate. It raises blood sugar significantly more than starch from a whole food source, such as a potato. Different types of fat affect your health in dramatically different ways. Cod liver oil is a potent source of healthy omega-3 fat, while if you were to consume the same amount of Crisco fat, the health effects would be completely opposite. You will not lose weight if your calories don’t satisfy you. Unsustainable diets leave you feeling hungry all the time. The more nutrient-dense a food is, the more satisfying it will be. The source of the calories matters! All of your cells can metabolize glucose, but only the liver can metabolize fructose. Ground whole grain corn This is derived from dent corn, also known as field corn. This GMO corn contains traces of glyphosate, an herbicide linked to cancer. Dent corn may also sit for a year before turning into dog food, developing a deadly aflatoxin, also known to cause cancer. Dogs are not meant to consume high amounts of grain! This highly refined starch is just hidden sugar that does not have to be listed on the label. The average dog food is about 48% carbohydrate, which can create metabolic issues, a fatty liver, and obesity. 2. Meat and bone meal This “meal” is typically sourced from dead, dying, diseased, or disabled animals. Euthanized dogs can even be used to create meat and bone meal! 3. Soybean meal Dogs are not meant to consume soybeans, especially highly processed GMO soy. Soybean meal is processed with chemical solvents like hexane and contains phytonutrients that can affect the thyroid, hormones, and offspring if your dog is pregnant. 4. Animal fat This sounds healthy, but it is usually combined with highly oxidized seed oils preserved with chemicals such as BHA or BHT—carcinogens banned in Europe. 5. Corn gluten meal This ethanol byproduct contains a corn protein called zein, which is incomplete and poorly absorbed. 6. Chicken byproduct meal This ingredient also includes dead, dying, diseased, and disabled animals (4D’s), which may also contain antibiotics. 7. Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2 Dangerous dog food additives like food coloring can cause neurological issues and contribute to tumor formation. 8. Animal digest This is slaughterhouse waste! 9. Wheat middlings This wheat industry waste product contains ethoxyquin, a carcinogenic ingredient banned in Europe. It can also form acrylamide when cooked, which can trigger cancer and liver problems. Your insulin drops on your first day of fasting, allowing you to tap into your fat reserve. Electrolytes, trace minerals, and B vitamins can be very beneficial during prolonged fasting, especially if you haven’t built up a reserve of these nutrients. You can drink tea and coffee without cream or sugar and have water with lemon during your 5-day fast. Plenty of sun, long walks in nature, hot and cold therapy, and HIIT can also enhance the benefits of prolonged fasting. On day 2 of prolonged fasting, you get deeper into ketosis, which means your body burns fat for energy. Autophagy typically begins on the second day of prolonged fasting. This is the process in which the body recycles damaged proteins and uses them for fuel and new tissues. On day 3, brain function and mood continue to improve. BDNF is stimulated, which helps support brain cell regeneration and increases your learning capacity. You also enter a state of deep autophagy, which helps repair mitochondrial damage and clean up intracellular pathogens. On day 3 of a prolonged fast, your immune system essentially resets. Prolonged fasting supports the growth of the thymus gland and allows the gut lining to regenerate completely. People often experience a massive spike in growth hormone on day 3, which protects against muscle loss. On day 4, hunger is gone, and maximum fat burning occurs! Bone broth can be beneficial if you’re struggling through a 5-day fast or experiencing a stressful event. Longevity and protective genes are heightened, and your antioxidant networks are strengthened during prolonged fasting. It can also help diversify your microbiome. Slowly begin the refeeding process with around ¼ of your typical calories. Try an egg with sauerkraut, and then wait a few hours before consuming something like a small amount of soup with avocado. After a few more hours, consume berries and nuts. Wait before introducing a full meal and avoid sugar and carbohydrates. High-quality food is vital at this time! Glucose is the body’s preferred energy source! If glucose is so good for you, why does your body do everything it can to eliminate it from your blood? The average thin person has about 100,000 calories of stored fat and only 1,700 calories of glucose. When you consume sugar, it’s removed from the blood very quickly, and the excess sugar is converted into fat. The body requires a small amount of glucose, but your body can make this small amount. The single root cause of chronic disease is high glucose! Blood sugar spikes create inflammation on the inside of the arteries, leading to chronically high insulin levels to remove the sugar. The body compensates with insulin resistance to slow down the glucose that enters the cells. When avocados arrive at the grocery store, they’re often put into a gas chamber and artificially ripened with ethylene gas. The artificial ripening process leaves this superfood devoid of phytonutrients. One research study evaluated 22 different brands of avocado oil and discovered that many products were oxidized, which can cause inflammation. Surprisingly, many products were actually fake avocado oil, mainly composed of soy and canola oils. Approximately 82% of avocado oil is not what it says it is! In the US, there are no official rules on avocado oil or a legally binding definition of the avocado oil extraction process. This has opened the door for corruption. Some avocado oil products contain no avocado oil at all! The origins of your avocado oil can also be misleading. A product can be labeled “product of the US”, but grown and blended elsewhere, as long as the final product is bottled in the US. Avocado oil doesn’t always have an expiration or production date, making it difficult to determine how long it’s been sitting on the shelf. Fast food guacamole does not contain much avocado. It’s often replaced with green peas, hydrogenated oils, and food starches. Cosmetics also claim to use avocado oil, yet soy, palm, and mineral oils are usually listed first on the ingredient list. If you want to buy avocado oil, look for the following: •Dark, glass bottle •Expiration date •Avoid the cheapest brand •Look for the harvest date •Look for green-colored oil When choosing avocados, look for Californian varieties, such as the Hass variety. Avoid the cheaper, shiny, bagged varieties. Avocados can be an incredibly healthy food if you choose the right ones. They contain healthy fats, minimal omega-6 fats, and are a rich source of potassium and magnesium. You probably wouldn’t want to eat moldy bread, but moldy cheese will not negatively affect your health. The mold on cheese does not produce a harmful byproduct like some other molds. Avoid moldy foods such as peanuts, rice, grains, corn, dried fruit, and coffee. Eating mold on these foods can be harmful to your liver and can even cause cancer. If you have mold or fungus in or on your body, it’s probably not related to eating mold, but an issue with your microbiome. In a healthy microbiome, you have abundant good bacteria and are typically unaffected by fungus, mold, and yeast. When your gut bacteria are destroyed, fungus and mold can overgrow. Antibiotics, steroids, high levels of iron, and alcohol are detrimental to your gut microbes. Increased pH in the body can also contribute to the overgrowth of fungi and molds. Mold and fungus can downgrade your vitamin D receptors. Without sufficient vitamin D, your immune system can not function properly. Increase vitamin D to penetrate this resistance. Whenever you increase your vitamin D intake, you must also increase magnesium, vitamin K2, and zinc. A 2017 Japanese study found that 3 minutes of fast-paced walking followed by 3 minutes of regular walking significantly affected blood pressure levels and leg strength. Repeating this cycle 5 times was more beneficial than 1.5 to 2 hours of walking. For more walking benefits, try backward walking! It strengthens the knees, ankles, and hips. Nasal breathing while walking can increase CO2, which makes oxygen more efficient in your blood. Walking can reduce cortisol naturally, helping to relieve stress. Leave your phone and music at home, and focus on the sights, sounds, and smells during your walk. Another way to increase the benefits of walking is with hypoxia training. To do this, inhale for 3 steps and exhale for 4 steps. You can also try holding your breath for 5 to 10 seconds, every few minutes. Hypoxia training can trigger genes that can strengthen your body, decrease inflammation, and improve recovery. Most people don’t know about the invisible middleman making more than 10 of the top drug companies combined. Healthcare may seem like a broken system, but it’s actually not broken at all. It works great; it’s just not working for you. Pharmacy benefit managers use their contracts to make massive profits off of everyone. PBMs may appear to be helpful. They negotiate lower prices for manufacturing companies, reduce out-of-pocket expenses, and handle logistics between employers and insurance companies. Pharmacy benefit managers charge the employer a very high price and pay the pharmacies a very low price, pocketing the difference. This is known as spread pricing. PBMs decide which drugs your plan covers, how much you’ll pay out of pocket, which pharmacy you can use, and when or if you’ll get your medication. Cheaper and better drugs are often denied if PBMs don’t get a big enough rebate. They can even force you to fill your prescriptions at specific PBM pharmacies for more profit. Drug companies have to give PBMs a kickback or “rebate” to get their drugs covered by insurance companies. To afford this rebate, drug companies raise the list price, and PBMs promote the drug that gives them the most profit. Pharmacy benefit managers own insurance companies and pharmacies. Three of the largest PBMs control 80% of the medications in the U.S. Surprisingly, PBMs don’t exist in other countries.
