Flight 305: The Gentleman Hijacker Who Became a Legend
"Miss, I have a bomb and I want you to sit with me."
November 24, 1971. Thanksgiving Eve. Flight attendant Florence Schaffner opens a note from the polite businessman in seat 18E—and realizes she's in the middle of a hijacking.
This is the story of D.B. Cooper, Flight 305, and the only unsolved hijacking in American history.
The hijacker was calm. Polite. Well-dressed. He ordered bourbon, said "please" and "thank you," and never raised his voice.
He demanded $200,000, four parachutes, and a flight to Mexico.
Then, somewhere over the wilderness of Washington state, he opened the rear door of the plane and jumped into the night.
With $200,000 strapped to his body. In a business suit. In freezing rain.
And vanished.
The FBI launched the largest manhunt in history. Searched thousands of square miles. Followed thousands of leads.
They never found him.
And instead of being remembered as a criminal, D.B. Cooper became a legend.
Songs were written about him. Movies made. T-shirts sold. He became America's favorite criminal—the gentleman hijacker who stuck it to the system and got away with it.
But here's the question that's been nagging me:
Why do we romanticize sin when it's polite?
Why do we cheer for criminals when they're charming?
In this episode, I tell the full story of Flight 305, the hijacking that made D.B. Cooper a legend, and the dangerous way we celebrate sin when it's dressed up nicely.
Because the Bible is clear: "There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death" (Proverbs 14:12).
Legends don't save you. Jesus does.
