The lawyer's inquiry led to Jesus affirming the importance of loving God and one's neighbor. While they agreed on this theological principle, Jesus emphasized practical application, stating, "This do, and thou shalt live," challenging the lawyer to reflect on his failures to uphold the law. However, instead of confronting his imperfections, the lawyer attempted to justify himself, revealing a common tendency to evade self-reflection and present oneself as virtuous when faced with the law's demands.
