The Real History of Cabbage Patch Kids and Incubator Babies - The premise of the "Cabbage Patch Kids" predates the 1980s, and started nearly 100 years prior. The massive collection of motherless babies living in circular incubators looked like a field of cabbages (using a play on the word "nursery" which could be a place for a baby or a place for young plants). They made a "cutesy" name for the attending nurses, and called them "Cabbage Fairies." This was much more palatable than "the keeper of stolen children."
