The Mirage of “Everything for Free”: Mamdani’s Broken Promise

New York politician Zohran Mamdani’s proposal to implement free bus service in the city has collapsed under the weight of reality. What he presented as a resounding success turned out, according to MTA reports, to be an expensive, poorly planned initiative with exaggerated results.

Mamdani promised that eliminating fares would benefit everyone, but he failed to mention that the cost would exceed $700 million per year and that the pilot program showed no significant improvement in safety or efficiency. Added to that was his political inability to secure state funding, which led to the program’s failure.

Mamdani’s case reflects the core problem of modern populism: selling the illusion that everything can be free without saying who foots the bill. In the real world, ideological promises inevitably crash into arithmetic.
