China has just taken one of its boldest steps yet toward technological independence. Days after Xi Jinping’s meeting with Donald Trump in South Korea, Beijing banned all state-funded data centers from using or purchasing foreign AI chips — effectively cutting off reliance on U.S. semiconductors like those from NVIDIA and AMD.
This sweeping move marks a turning point in the global AI race, signaling that China’s domestic chip industry — led by Huawei, Alibaba, and SMIC — is now ready to stand on its own. From now on, all new government-backed data centers must use Chinese processors, while older ones face audits and gradual phaseouts.
The policy is part of Beijing’s broader plan for “algorithmic sovereignty” — a vision to control all of China’s AI infrastructure by 2027. It’s not just about chips; it’s about national security, economic resilience, and digital power.
Meanwhile, the U.S. faces a dilemma: while China can swiftly cut off foreign chips, America’s dependence on Chinese rare earths may take years to resolve. As both sides race toward tech self-reliance, the global balance of innovation and influence is being rewritten.
Watch this video to understand how China’s AI ban reshapes the semiconductor industry, challenges Washington’s tech dominance, and defines the future of global technological sovereignty.
