C. W. Mangum, witness for the State, at the Trial of Leo Frank in the Fulton County Superior Court of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1913 (Testimony Portion From July 28 - August 21, 1913; Closing Arguments August 21-25, 1913)
C. W. Mangum, jail guard, testified that Chiefs Beavers and Lanford and Detective Scott arrived with Jim Conley on the fourth floor to confront Frank. Mangum informed Frank; he replied: “No, my attorney is not here and I have nobody to defend me.” Frank stressed no lawyer and no one to witness the exchange.
Mangum’s brief account showed Frank refused an un-counseled confrontation—not fear of Conley, but legal caution.
The State offered this to imply guilt; the defense framed it as prudent innocence.
