Outrage in Italy Over Reduced Sentence for Murderer

The family of Maurizio Gugliotta, a 51-year-old man murdered in Turin, reacted with fury after Nigerian migrant Khalid De Greata was sentenced to only 12 years in prison for slitting Gugliotta’s throat in 2017.

The reason for the reduced sentence? The court ruled that De Greata suffered from “boat stress” — trauma from his Mediterranean journey to Italy. The Italian Supreme Court later upheld this decision in 2019.

As the verdict was read, Gugliotta’s family shouted in anger:

“It’s a disgrace, you’re heartless.”

His widow also questioned the psychiatric ruling, asking why no one noticed any issues before the murder.

The case has reignited debate over justice, immigration, and accountability in Italy.
