Major Chinese bridge collapses into river just months after opening to traffic

A newly built bridge at a hydropower station in southwest China collapsed Tuesday, sending concrete and steel into a river just months after opening.

Officials reported no casualties, though cracks had been spotted the day before, prompting temporary traffic controls.

The Hongqi Bridge, part of the G317 national highway in Sichuan Province, stood 625 meters above the gorge and was intended to improve connectivity to Tibet.

Footage shared on social media showed the structure buckling before falling, while authorities quickly closed the site and warned of safety risks, Fox News has reported.

Early assessments suggest geological instability may have contributed, and an investigation into the collapse is underway.
