Kallmünz Castle occupies a commanding position overlooking the confluence
of the Naab and Vils rivers. The relatively large complex is bordered
on two sides by rock faces, while the third, facing the plateau,
is protected by a now relatively shallow dry moat with a barbican
and wall towers constructed of rubble stone, which were added
in the 15th century. The impressive curtain wall is almost completely
preserved. Like the keep and the palace, it is faced with smaller,
roughly hewn limestone blocks. To the south, facing the town
and the hillside, there is an additional exit protected by a small gatehouse.
